Unlocking Relief: Why Use Dry Needling and Cupping in Pelvic Floor Therapy?

Dry needling and cupping to enhance pelvic floor therapy

Navigating the world of pain and dysfunction can feel overwhelming. Our bodies are wonderfully nuanced, and finding the right tools for relief is essential. When it comes to pelvic floor dysfunction, it’s often the case that the pelvic floor is responding to issues elsewhere in the body. That’s where innovative techniques like dry needling and cupping come into play, because the pelvic floor is a complex network of muscles, and just like any other muscle group, it can experience tension and dysfunction.

The beauty of dry needling and cupping lies in their versatility. Both techniques can be applied to various areas of the body, making them valuable assets in a comprehensive treatment plan. When we combine these modalities with manual therapy—think hands-on techniques targeting the musculoskeletal system—and therapeutic exercises, we create a harmonious effect that promotes longer-lasting relief.

Functional Dry Needling is the insertion of a small, fine needle (like an acupuncture needle) into a muscle, myofascial tissue, and/or trigger point in order to stimulate change to promote healing. This increases blood flow to the region, decreases inflammation, releases knots or tension spots, and overall works to improve pain or dysfunction. It can produce a muscle twitch or spasm at times, and interacts with your nervous system to typically increase the pain pressure threshold. While research on dry needling is still evolving, early findings are promising—particularly for conditions like low back and/or neck pain!

If you’ve ever spotted those bruise-looking circular marks on an athlete’s skin, you’ve seen the aftermath of the age-old practice, called Therapeutic Cupping. This involves placing silicone or glass cups on the skin to create suction, where the cup can either stay in one spot for a targeted treatment or glide across the skin with an oil-based formula, reminiscent of a deep tissue massage. This technique boosts circulation, reduces muscle tension, and can even promote relaxation.

While dry needling and cupping can be incredibly beneficial, they aren’t for everyone. At Genesis, we believe in a personalized approach.
